Microbes, such as the bacterium Arcobacter sulfidicus, use the energy from oxidizing these hydrogen sulfide molecules to power the synthesis of carbon compounds such as glucose. Several species of vent shrimp feed on mats of A. sulfidicus bacteria. Vent rat fish feed on these shrimp (see image below).
