QUESTION 4    4.1.  Pleаse refer tо the RESOURCES ADDENDUM tо аccess the imаges needed fоr this question. Seahorses are fish that have evolved a number of unusual adaptations such as a prehensile tail. Another such adaptation is that the male seahorse has a pouch on its abdomen in which to carry young – as many as 2 000 at a time. A male seahorse pregnancy lasts from 10 to 25 days depending on the species. The male and female seahorses do daily mating dances, intertwining their tails and swimming together. This ritual can last for as long as eight hours. It ends with the female depositing her eggs in the male's pouch. The eggs are then fertilised and hatch in the male's pouch. The male cares for the young as they grow, regulating the water salinity in the pouch.  When the tiny seahorses are ready to be born, the male undergoes muscular contractions to expel the young from the pouch. While male seahorses go the extra mile to give birth, the parents do not provide their tiny offspring with any protection after they are born.  About five infant seahorses in every 1 000 survive to adulthood.   4.1.1.
