In а lаndmаrk study published in 1973, Rоsenhan challenged the ability оf current psychоlogists to distinguish between "normal" and "abnormal" behavior. To test the current models and techniques, he had confederates fake a mental illness to get admitted into a mental hospital only to immediately cease their abnormal behaviors. The startling results showed that it took these "patients" an average of 19 days to be released from the hospital. Furthermore, a group of people in the hospital identified the confederates almost immediately...the actual patients! So, the people who experienced symptoms every day were better at identifying them than the trained professionals! What are your initial thoughts on this study? Does it surprise you? What is a stigma? To merge this reflection with what you have learned in Module 6, do you think that the average person in modern society has a firm grasp of mental disorder? Does the average person’s knowledge of specific mental disorders match what you have learned so far? Are there any specific disorders of which you believe the average person has a poor understanding?
