Be sure to number each response.    1. Despite the common misconception that the Americas were sparsely populated by primitive peoples that seems to help justify colonization, some of the most striking features of native societies at the time of contact with Europeans was their size, complexity and diversity. Knowing what we learned about the pre- Columbian peoples of North and South America Provide from class, provide several examples from your readings and lecture that highlight the many diverse and advanced civilizations that occupied the “New World” prior to, and during the early stages of European colonization. What does this show us about pre- Colombian life in the Americas? Be sure to use several specific examples for each of the civilizations you mention and try to provide a balanced account.   2. From the very moment that Europeans first landed in the Caribbean during the late 15th century they engaged in an interchange of flora, fauna, and more, with the natives that would eventually become what we know as the Colombian Exchange. How did this major exchange come to influence both the New and Old Worlds in its wake? You should identify the goods, ideas, and additional elements, involved in the two-way exchange, as well as how this relationship evolved between the fifteenth and sixteenth century. Be sure to support your argument with several key examples from lecture and your readings.   3. While most tend to believe that many of the foundational tenants that make up the American identity come from just one group of English colonists settling along the Atlantic coast, we've seen how it was actually many early settlements made up of various peoples with a wide range of corresponding and conflicting ideas. Briefly compare and contrast these 3 early regions of settlement in British North America that we've focused on in class. Focus on key aspects including like the ideological origins of the colony and who came to settle it. What values they brought with them, religion, economics, government, social structure, labor base. How they got along with natives and finally, how each early settlement came to shape unique parts of our American identity and founding story. Think about what values and beliefs become incorporated into who we are, or at least who we project ourselves to be as a nation. Use specifics from lecture and readings, in order to highlight the lasting impact of these early English settlements on America's development as well as, their influence on our collective national identity.   4. Although most colonists in British North America remained loyal until the start of the Revolution and some well beyond, relations between the two peoples became increasingly stressed between 1700 and 1775. Briefly summarize the key factors and major events that eventually led American colonists to take- up arms in open rebellion against their King and the strongest military power on the globe during the late 18th century. Be sure to support your argument with several key examples from lecture and your readings.
