WRITING PROMPT: Students will write а fоur-pаrаgraph essay that reacts either tо Stephen King’s essay, “Reading tо Write” or to Frederick Douglass’s essay, “Learning to Read and Write.” The thesis should state an overall one-word or one-phrase reaction plus two reasons for it Example: King’s argument is insightful because he [something King does] and [something else King does]. Remember that the quotes I’ve provided in the stimulus are all that you can use to support the thesis, so your thesis must make a claim and reasons for it that relate clearly to the material in the quotations at the bottom of these instructions.  The body paragraphs (there are only two in this essay) will use PIETIE (Point, Illustrate, Explain, Transition, Illustrate, Explain) to support one of the reasons from the thesis for the one-word or one-phrase reaction INTRODUCTION: NOTE: Do not quote in the introduction paragraph. The summary should be in your own words. This paragraph differs from a traditional introduction in a few ways, so follow the requirements here carefully:   The first sentence should introduce the author and title of the essay you’re writing about. Provide more context as needed: When was the essay originally published? What is the author’s purpose? Who is the author's intended audience?   The next four to five sentences should summarize the work. Describe its main idea, its key supporting points, and an overview of the kinds of details, examples, or evidence given to support his points. The summary should be thorough and should touch on all important aspects of the text. The last sentence of the summary should include an MLA in-text citation with the page range of the work in parentheses. Remember that the period goes directly after the in-text citation, not directly after the last word of the summary.  The last sentence of the intro should clearly state the essay’s thesis, which is a supportable reaction to (overall objective impression of) the work. Possible choices include, but are not limited to, “humorous, thoughtful, engaging, persuasive, captivating, inspiring, etc...”. Example: Douglass’s narrative about his fight to achieve literacy is inspiring because it shows [something inspiring the narrative shows] and [something else inspiring the narrative shows].
