Spirituаl Prаctices-Midrаsh Midrash is an ancient Jewish traditiоn оf imaginatively entering intо the biblical text. If you listen/read closely enough sacred text, you will come to realize that the biblical text itself sometimes does not provide us with a great deal of detail about events or characters. For example, when God calls Abram to uproot his life and begin his own pilgrimage to an unknown land, the sacred text is silent, for example, on the conversation that he must had with his wife to Sari to embark on such an outlandish journey. But they did. And most assuredly there had to be a conversation between husband wife about the move. Creative Midrash is a way to creatively enter into a biblical story and make it come "alive." Assignment Instructions: For your Midrash this week, read Painter’s “Writing Exploration through Midrash,” pp. 24-27. You will notice that there are a number of prompts under "Invitation to Lectio: Abram and Sarai Called to Leave Home." Following these prompts, spend at least 15 minutes in silence meditating/reflecting on the Genesis text. And write your own Midrash based on the prompts. Remember Midrash is not biblical or scholarly analysis of the scriptural text. Rather it is about imaginatively placing yourself into the story itself to gain new insights about its characters--also perhaps about you as well. What are the emotions, fears, worries, uncertainties, even anticipated joys that Abram and Sarai may have experienced on embarking on their own, largely unknown pilgrimage. Be sure that your Midrash is at least 500 words in length. For this assignment, you will be using Honorlock.
