He tells me Mira is the only one who truly understands him. I thought that was beautiful — until I learned what happened with Helen. Mira moved on without a moment's pause. My father is building his final years around a relationship that will vanish the instant he does, and Mira won't even notice he's gone. Don't we have a right to know that before we watch him fall in love?' Does this change your analysis?Your Day 1 Writing:It is a fact that when Mira was taking care of Helen that she was happier because of Mira. It is also a fact that had she known about Mira's seamless transition between patients, this might have affected her happiness. That being said, the board disclosing of this information would be more harmful for the patients and keep them from having joyful final years. Claire is wrong to ask this of them and is instead acting out of her own resentment and not what would be best for patients under Mira's care.In the passage, it was important when they argued that the inability to grieve is a mechanism that was implemented and not a manifestation of Mira's true feelings. It is true that had she had the ability to grieve her work with other patients would have been compromised, minimizing the amount of help she was able to give. This is important to remember, she did show evidence of caring for Helen. She knew her better than anyone else and was able to give updates on her health in quicker time than anyone else. She also took note of what made her calm and what irritated her, showing signs of care for well-being.The advertisement is not wrong to market her as a caregiver/companion, because that is exactly what she is. She gave care to Helen's medical conditions while also participating in conversation and tried to promote overall well-being. If you were to ask Helen if she felt that Mira was an excellent caregiver/companion, Helen would most likely say yes, showcasing the fact that she was not only these two things but a good one at that.Mira's seamless transition does not discount her Helen's moral significance. If Helen was a real person, it would be more appropriate to ask these questions, but because of her questionable personhood, this make it more difficult. When asked, she said that during those 4 years, Helen was the most important thing to her. This is appropriate and she was designed to be this way. This is like a person born with no legs, to try and walk. Both Helen and this person do not have the physical capabilities or understanding to begin trying. This should not mean that she does not care for Helen because she has physical limitations on how she processes the information of her death. It is also important that in Mira's mechanisms, it states that she does not form an attachment to previous patients. The word previous is important because what it entails is that she does form attachments to current patients, which should give Claire some peace of mind. While Mira was working with Helen, she did care about Helen as much as Helen cared about her. She showed compassion and love as she helped her as her patient. Everything that Mira is programmed to do maximizes her care for the general public and at large, she is helping far more people than she is "hurting". Her work with these patients outweigh the small inconvenience of Claire's discomfort.Another important note is that Mira was only programmed to give physical care and not as much emotional care. This is something that Mira adapted on her own, providing evidence that she did care for Helen in a way that manifested entirely from her. The difference is that this was something that she developed on her own whereas the ability to grieve was blocked by a manufacturer.Having Mira be labelled as a care tool would ultimately harm the residents and their families further than the current situation. If Mira was just a care tool, the patient might resent her and not be as receptive to her care. This would ultimately impact the last years of the residents life in a negative way. Had Mira actually been given the ability to grieve it would be unsettling for other to watch and would impact the level and amount of care she was able to give. Neither of these situations seem plausible. It is important for the companion/caregiver to be able to give undivided quality care to their patient and then be able to transition towards the next. If a real person that worked in elderly care were to work with a patient and form an attachment, they would also be expected to seamlessly transition to the next. This is apart of professionalism because the caregiver is not supposed to negatively impact their next patient because of previous situations. I think that the real issue is the uncertainty of Mira's personhood for Claire. If Mira was 100% conscious, Claire would have no question of if Mira's care was behavioral output versus natural feelings. She would not expect a real caregiver to grieve and for their work to be impacted with their next patient. When Helen was alive, she saw Mira as fully conscious because of her outward presentation of care for Helen, but when Helen died she did not see an outward presentation of grief, making Claire uncomfortable and believing that everything else must be false as well. The reality of the situation is that Mira is somewhere in the middle and that she should not expect such large portrayals of emotion from a being of this sort. This is her own fault in judgement as she is looking for evidence to support either drastic claim.Schwitzgebel claims that there are two grave mistakes that you can make in accordance with handling Artificial Intelligence (AI). He finds that you can err on the side of being too generous and causing disgrace to your own race for over respecting another or you could cause harm to the AI because they do have the ability to feel emotions and sensations. I find that it the negative outcome of the latter is far worse than its counterpart. Claire should find more comfort in the evidence of her care rather than find insult in the evidence of Mira's care to another patient.Chiang also states that if there is question of consciousness it is important to consider these heavily because even if there is 15% change of personhood in AI, that is a 15% chance of death if it were to be deleted. The board has stated that if they were to have to go through with Claire's disclosure they would end the program altogether making this chance of death extremely relevant. The fact is, with the disclosure the ability for the AIs to work well would be compromised, indicating that the weight of their care being severely lessened. This makes sense why the program would just be terminated as the good no longer outweighs the negative because of the minimization their care would be at. If they were put in the place of having to terminate the AIs they would then have a 15% chance of killing someone with personhood and consciousness breaking all moral boundaries.
