He wakes each morning at 4:30 a.m. and has a large breakfast of three eggs, bacon, hash browns, toast with preserves, coffee, and orange juice. Following breakfast he milks the cows, feeds the livestock, and tends to his crops. His usual lunchtime routine is to consume two peanut butter sandwiches followed by more work and a dinner consisting of a variety of vegetables, beef, pork, or chicken, and chess pie. At the time of examination, the patient has a low-grade fever, chills, and abdominal cramping. The physician orders a stool culture. The stool sample is plated on SBA, MacConkey agar (MAC), and Hektoen enteric (HE) agar. The sample produces a variety of colonies with an increased number of colorless colonies on MAC.
