On January 5, 2020, an anti-corporate activist came to the CEO’s office for a planned interview with Dellums, but instead, when ushered into Dellums’s inner office by Pico, pulled out a gun and tried to assassinate Dellums. Pico tackled the assailant and held him down until the police arrived and took the attacker into custody. Dellums was saved, but Pico suffered a broken hand in the struggle. The hand was treated, but due to natural complications, Pico could no longer type without pain. Typing was a major part of Pico’s job. Grateful for Pico’s sacrifice, Dellums promised that if Pico retired, Defco would pay Pico a monthly pension of $3,000. Pico retired on February 1, 2021. Defco paid Pico the promised pension up to February 1, 2026. On December 29, 2025, Dellums retired from his CEO position.
