Mоdule 1: Nаrrаtive Required Tоpic Yоur personаl narrative will focus on a specific experience in your life that taught you an important lesson. The lesson you learned needs to be one that has helped shape the person you are and has influenced who you want to be. Think about things that have happened to you that have helped you decide that you didn’t want to make a particular mistake again in life or that you did want to incorporate a specific habit, attitude, or approach when facing a challenge. As you brainstorm ideas for this essay, consider times when specific events have happened in your life that have taught you lessons about the person you want to be – or want to avoid being – when it comes to general character or attitude, your family or personal life, your career, your community involvement, your spiritual life, or your intellectual life.  Length The essay should include a minimum of 600 words. The final essay should consist of at least five paragraphs. If you include dialogue, you may need more paragraphs.   Person Since you are writing about something that happened to you, it is appropriate to use first person (“I”) in your story. Vary sentence structure. Avoid starting too many sentences with “I.”   Tone and Approach Your content should be original. This narrative is your own story of something that happened to you. Your essay may be very serious or quite humorous and should reflect your original voice as a writer.   Dialogue If you include dialogue (conversation between you and someone else who is part of the story) in your narrative, punctuate and set off dialogue properly. Remember that each remark from a new speaker begins a new paragraph.   Thesis The thesis of your narrative may be implied at the beginning of the essay, but it should be clearly stated in the conclusion (last paragraph) of the paper. The thesis should clearly state what the experience taught you/what you gained from the experience. Here are some very general ways you could begin phrasing your thesis: From this experience, I learned __________ . The events of that important day taught me that ___________.   Important Reminders and Requirements Stick to the story of something that happened in a day, an afternoon, or an hour – not something that happened over a period of days, weeks, or months. Tell your story in the order that it happened. Your concluding paragraph must include a thesis statement that expresses what you learned. Give your essay an appropriate title that is correctly capitalized. Center the title. Since you will be typing your response into an answer box in your online course, you don’t need a header or heading for this essay. You can single-space the paragraphs in this assignment since you are completing it online within the assignment link. Indent the first line of each paragraph. Also, double-space between paragraphs so that it is clear where each new paragraph begins. You can do this by hitting the “enter” key twice. It is important that the instructor can tell where each paragraph begins or ends. The essay is formatted as a one-question essay test. This essay is graded manually by the instructor, so you won’t immediately receive a grade.
