Study 2:  A cognitive psychologist was studying the Dunning-Kruger effect, which suggests that those who know very little about a topic are often among the most confident in their knowledge.  The researcher hypothesized that those with lower knowledge may have high confidence because they are less able than others to tell when questions tend to be easy versus difficult.  To test this, the researcher pretested a group of students on their general knowledge of U.S. trivia, and (without telling them how they did) identified a group of 30 students who scored relatively low in knowledge and a different group of 30 students who scored relatively high in knowledge. He then randomly assigned half of each group of participants to complete an easy trivia test and the other half to complete a hard trivia test, and asked each participant what percent of the answers they believed they had gotten correct (i.e., their estimated accuracy).
