One оf the criteria suggested by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for state reopening is a downward trajectory of documented COVID-19 cases within a 14-day period. However, drawing inferences from the data about a downward trajectory is difficult. One of the major concerns is a varying number of tests from day to day which means that the number of positive cases will also vary, even if the intensity of the pandemic is still at its peak. In this exhibit, you are suggested to conduct a simple hypothesis test to identify if Indiana has seen a decrease in the number of COVID-19 cases recently. Please, be mindful of the results because this test is a quick way to get some insights into the situation using techniques from our class. Official statistical methods used to identify the downward trend in COVID-19 cases are different from the suggested test. The average number of positive COVID-19 cases in Indiana during the time period from April 1 to May 31, 2020, was equal to 526.3 new cases per day.  A sample of recent 14 days from June 1 to June 14, 2020, showed that the average number of cases is equal to 412 per day with the sample standard deviation equal to 74.7 new cases per day. Assuming that the number of new cases follows the normal distribution, test the hypothesis if the number of new cases in the first 14 days of June has decreased compared to a prior two-month period.
