BODY PARAGRAPH TWO: The Declаrаtiоn's Fоundаtiоnal Principles (250–300 words) Write a paragraph that lays out what the Declaration actually claims, addressing the following: A topic sentence framing this paragraph around the Declaration's foundational principles What the document says about government's purpose, and about when the people have the right to alter or abolish it Its account of natural/unalienable rights — where do these rights come from, and which specific rights are named? The "self-evident truths" it claims — what are they, and how does the document characterize them? Its stated purpose and audience — why was it written, and to whom is it addressed? The Declaration includes a long list of specific grievances against King George III before reaching its conclusion. Point to at least one specific grievance from this list, and explain briefly what it suggests about how the colonists understood the relationship between government and the governed. How does the document's language — phrases like "all men" or "the people" — define who is included in the political community it describes? 3–4 direct quotations, cited as (US 1776) on first mention, then (Declaration) or by title afterward. At least one quotation should focus on a specific word or phrase you find significant. After every quotation, explain in your own words what it reveals about the document's underlying philosophy. Close with a preliminary, text-based judgment: based only on what these two documents say, does the Declaration look like an "enlightened" document by Kant's definition? Note: Every quotation must be verifiable, word-for-word, against the assigned text. Quotations that do not match the provided source will not receive credit and may be treated as a source integrity issue.
