In the first hаlf оf this clаss, we hаve read literature frоm twо genres (fiction and poetry) by a diversity of authors that engage with a variety of issues and themes. For this mini essay, choose two works of literature. Then, write a focused comparison/contrast of how those works are similar and different. Below, you’ll find a list of prompt questions to help you brainstorm. You do not have to answer all of the questions. They are intended to help provide examples of the ideas that you could explore in your mini essay.  Are the works of literature from the same genre or are they from different genres? (Even if the works are from the same genre, two poems for example, perhaps they differ in terms of form? A sonnet and a villanelle, for example.) How does each author’s approach to genre/form create a unique work of literature?  Do these two works share common themes? If so, do the perspectives offered align or differ?  Identify key characters (or speakers, in a poem) between the two works. What do the characters share in terms of motivation, values, relationships? How do they differ? How do the social and historical circumstances surrounding each work influence the ways that the authors have created the characters/speakers in their works?  What insight can be gained from examining these two works side by side? How does comparing/contrasting the texts provide a new perspective on each?  In order to earn full credit, be specific in pointing to examples/evidence from each work to support your claims.
