INSTRUCTIONS: Write twо essаys оf аpprоximаtely 400–500 words each. Choose one prompt from Part I: Ideas and one prompt from Part II: Art and Culture. You will have 100 minutes (1 hour and 40 minutes) to complete both essays. Your responses will be typed and submitted directly in Canvas. You may use one 3×5-inch note card containing notes you have prepared in advance. No textbooks, additional notes, websites, phones, electronic resources, or other outside materials may be used during the exam. Each essay should present a clear argument and use specific examples from course materials to support your ideas. Because this is a cumulative final exam, your responses should demonstrate your understanding of important concepts, works, movements, and themes covered throughout the course. This exam is worth 10% of your final course grade. I. Ideas Choose one of the following topics for your first essay. Using at least three examples from areas such as art, literature, drama, music, philosophy, or film, explain how the humanities reflected the shift from nineteenth-century optimism to the fear, uncertainty, and suspicion that characterized much of the twentieth century. The Scientific Revolution and Enlightenment challenged long-standing beliefs about the natural world, human knowledge, and society. Explain how Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein (1818) reflects concerns about scientific knowledge and its potential consequences for individuals and society. In your response, consider the relationship between scientific ambition, responsibility, and social or moral order. II. Art and Culture Choose one of the following topics for your second essay. Explain why Romantic artists and writers turned to the natural world as a source of inspiration and meaning. In your response, discuss the cultural or historical forces that contributed to this shift and use one or two specific artists, writers, or works to support your argument. Explain the role of the Royal Academy in shaping artistic standards and cultural taste in eighteenth- and nineteenth-century Europe. Then discuss how avant-garde movements challenged those standards and helped redefine the humanities by the late nineteenth century. Use at least two avant-garde movements and specific examples from art, literature, and/or music to support your response.
