Study Title: Comparison of students learning gains in Online V Face2Face (IRB201901907) Person(s) conducting the research: Sujata Krishna, Department of Physics, sujatakrishna@ufl.edu, (352) 392 - 3898 Kathryn McGill, Department of Physics, kathryn.mcgill@ufl.edu, (352) 846 - 2548 Shawn Weatherford, Department of Physics, sweatherford@ufl.edu, (352) 392-8747 Purpose of the research study: This study compares the student outcomes from face-to-face and online physics course offerings. What you will be asked to do in the study: You will be asked to complete a survey within the first three weeks of the semester and a second survey during the last three weeks of the semester to evaluate your improved understanding of physics. Time required: Regardless of your consent to participate, you will complete two surveys, titled Mechanics Survey I and Mechanics Survey II each requiring 35 minutes of your time. Risks and benefits: There are no more than minimal risks to your participation There are no direct benefits of participation for you. Confidentiality: Your responses to each survey will be recorded and stored in eLearning. Individual responses on each survey will be matched following the submission of final grades for this term. The matched file will be stored on SharePoint in a folder accessible to only the researchers listed at the top of this page. After matching and prior to computation of learning gains, any identifying information will be removed from the matching file. Compensation: All students completing and submitting each survey will receive 0.5 percentage points of extra credit per survey towards the overall course grade. The receipt of credit is independent of you choosing to participate in this study. Withdrawal from the study: You are free to withdraw your consent and to stop participating in this study at any time without consequence. Withdrawing from the study will result in removal of information collected from each of your survey responses from the study making comparisons between face-to-face and online classes. If you do not complete both surveys, you will be withdrawn from the study. If you wish to discuss the information above or any discomforts you may experience, please ask questions now or contact one of the research team members listed at the top of this form. If you have any questions regarding your rights as a research subject, please contact the Institutional Review Board (IRB02) office (University of Florida; PO Box 100173; Gainesville, FL 32610; (352) 392-0433 or irb2@ufl.edu.)
