IL6-3 In а 2011 pаper, Cussigh et аl examine the assоciatiоn between prоmoter polymorphisms in the interleukin 6 (IL-6) gene and chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infections to determine if these polymorphisms were a) influencing viral clearance (can the host get rid of the virus) and/or b) influencing disease progression. Chronic infection can result in a number of outcomes ranging from minimal liver damage, to cirrhosis, to hepatocellular carcinoma. They used a case-control study design, and the initial results are shown in Table 2 below. The authors go on to show a relationship between promoter polymorphisms and disease progression in chronic HCV patients.
