[BLANK-1] wаs tried, cоnvicted, аnd hаnged as a witch during the Salem Witch Trials. She did nоt, hоwever, fit the description of the usual suspects that were accused and found guilty during the trials. She was a 71-year-old full member of the church, connected to members of the community, from a well-known family, and highly respected in Salem. Her arrest and conviction sent shockwaves through the Salem community and signaled a new stage in the witch trials, where even upstanding members of the community could be convicted and executed. Her family was the first to mount a legal defense on her behalf (the families of previously accused witches were either afraid to or unwilling to come to the defense of the accused). Despite her family’s prominence and good reputation, it was embroiled in the factional conflict against the minister of Salem Village Church, and community members had complained that male members of the family were not involved as much as they could be in the Indian Wars on the frontier.
