What were the initial economic goals and motivations for European exploration of the Atlantic, and how did they change with the discovery of the New World? How did the Spanish experience influence other European powers like the French, and especially the English, as they experimented with their own economic systems in the New World, and by the end of the 17th century to what extent had the English adopted their own economic approach to New World colonization? In addition to thinking of “economics” in the traditional sense of profits and losses, good and services produced, etc., also think of the “socioeconomics” of the people at the ground level, i.e. the range of free and enslaved labor involved in the New World during this time. Please use specific examples and bits of evidence from the course to support your argument. In 1763, as the Seven Years’ War concluded, most of England’s North American colonists considered themselves the best subjects of the best empire the world had ever seen, and looked forward to a new era of prosperity. In 1766, the New York assembly even commissioned a statue of King George III to be erected in the center of New York City as a show of loyalty and comity! Yet barely a decade later a colonial mob was tearing down this statue and the colonists were fighting for independence from the mother country. How could such a precipitous decline in relations occur between the American colonists and the English government? Why, in short, was there an American Revolution? In this essay, be sure to consider English conceptions of ideology (i.e. the rights and responsibilities of individuals and the government, theories of taxation and political representation, etc.) and the ways this body of thought was interpreted in North America. Also, consider the goals and outlooks of the English government and the colonies in the years after the Seven Years’ War, and the reasons why they increasingly diverged over the next decade-and-a-half.
