The оverаrching gоаl оf аpplying these techniques into occupational therapy intervention is to help individuals learn effective coping skills and build their confidence and sense of personal agency to support their recovery process, reduce relapses, and improve their overall occupational engagement and quality of life. This approach was derived from the cognitive model of psychopathology. This model suggests that a person’s emotions, their physical responses, and their behaviors are all influenced by their perception of events. This model further indicates that situations do not necessarily determine how a person will behave, nor the feelings they will experience. Instead, the person’s perception of the situation determines how they react and the manner of their response. So, according to this model, a context or situation alone is not the source of distress, it is the way that the person interprets the situation that determines the distress.
