THE SITUATION Jаck's gоаl is tо get intо the nursing progrаm at any college. However, he first needs to complete his prerequisites. A prerequisite course is a class that a student must take before taking another course in order to ensure that the student is obtaining the information in the right order. For example, it would not make sense to take a class about multiplication without first learning how to add numbers together. When Jack met with his advisor, he learned that he would need to take 20 credits a quarter in order to complete all of his prerequisite courses in time to apply for the nursing program. Jack's advisor told him that this is called "overloading" because they only recommend that a student takes 15 credits a quarter. However, Jack felt confident that he could handle the work load. During his first quarter, he noticed that the hospital was hiring student interns. Jack felt that this internship would improve his learning and his ability to get into a nursing program. After applying, Jack was offered a job as an intern and eagerly accepted the position. This new internship required Jack to work nights and evenings for up to 20 hours per week and paid minimum wage. Jack was thankful that this job would not interfere with his classes at the college. The first quarter of school was hard, but Jack was able to pass all of his classes and receive good feedback from his internship supervisor at the hospital. Heading into second quarter, he was more tired and he was facing harder classes. Eventually, he started falling behind in his studying for his science courses which resulted in lower test and homework scores. Jack was worried that if he scored much lower, he would not be able to pass these classes. If he did not pass these classes, he would not be able to apply for the nursing program for another whole year.
