The Hаllоween hоlidаy оriginаted thousands of years ago in Celtic Britain and France. Every year, the Celts celebrated their New Year on November 1 with the festival of Samhain, the Lord of the Dead, to end the harvest and to acknowledge the beginning of winter. The Celts believed that Samhain called together all dead people on October 31 and that is was possible for the living and the dead to communicate during this turning point in the seasons. During the first century, the Romans invaded Celtic Britain. They, too, celebrated with a festival around the first of November, a holiday known as Pomona Day in honor of their goddess of gardens and the harvest. Eventually, the Celtic and Roman festivals merged into one holiday. By the ninth century, Christianity had spread throughout Britain and Europe, and the Roman Catholic Church declared November 1 a church holiday to honor the saints. This holiday was known as All Hallows. However, people continued to celebrate the old festivals, too, and the October 31 celebration became known as All Hallow Even. That ancient practice, now called Halloween, came to America with Irish immigrants whose customs included remnants of Celtic observances.
