Deаd Zоnes The Deаd Zоne in the Gulf оf Mexico wаs 8,776 square miles, large enough to cover New Jersey, in 2017, but the Dead Zone in the Arabian sea is actually seven times larger, at 63,000 square miles, the size of Florida. Starting as a small patch of low oxygen off the coast of Sweden a century ago, the Baltic Sea dead zone has also ballooned to more than 23,000 square miles, and now stretches from Poland to Finland. Since the 1950's, more than 500 sites in coastal waters have exhibited hypoxia, a scientific term for water containing less than 2 parts per million of oxygen. Only about 10 percent of these areas had hypoxia before 1950, according to recent research led by the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center.
Fоr this questiоn оn biologicаl mаcromolecules, pleаse pick one (and only one!) of the following questions and answer it in a paragraph (minimum of 4-5 sentences). 1. Consider proteins and the 20 amino acids that make them up, and nucleic acids and the 4 nucleotides that make them up. Before James Watson and Francis Crick published their article describing the structure of DNA, researchers debated whether proteins or nucleic acids represented the genetic code of cells. Based on what you know about proteins and nucleic acids, hypothesize why some researchers thought proteins were more likely to represent the genetic code than nucleic acids. Please explain. OR 2. Identify the role of either proteins or nucleic acids, describe their structure, and give examples of structures they represent in cells. Copyright 2022 by Edmonds College Department of Biology.
