Reаding 5:  Reаd the pаragraph and then answer the next five questiоns (20-25). In Japan, оld peоple traditionally have been highly respected. Evidence for this high level of respect can be seen in the fact that Japanese consider it a natural duty to care for their elderly parents. As a matter of fact, three fourths of all people who are 65 or older live with their children. Within the context of the extended family, the elderly remain highly productive, helping with housework, gardening, and, at times, the family business. The government also shows respect for the older generation by awarding medals to the elderly for attaining certain ages. In addition, the old traditionally receive the seat of honor, the deepest bows, the best clothes, and the first dip in the family bath. Throughout Asia, to neglect one’s parents or to leave them in the care of strangers has been considered a disgrace to the family name. (In recent years, however, as Japanese society has become more industrialized and the Japanese elderly have lost much of their land, they have also lost some of their prestige.) In contrast, the elderly are frequently derided in the United States. How often have you heard old people described as “old fogeys” or “geezers”? How often have you heard that they are “over the hill” or should be “put out to pasture”? These common expressions reflect a widespread prejudice against the elderly in our society, prejudice called “ageism” by Dr. Robert N. Buller, head of the National Institute on Aging. Dаn оperаted а flоwer shоp.  Dan hired Dave to assist him.  Dave is a high school student.  Dan set Dave’s hours so that he could work after school Monday through Friday, and on Saturday mornings.  Dan gave Dave the responsibility to assist customers, ring up sales, and make deliveries.  Dan paid Dave by the hour. One day, Dave had arrived after school and was asked by Dan to deliver several bouquets of flowers to a restaurant that had ordered them for their tables.  The restaurant was only a short distance walk from the flower shop.  Dan had placed the wrap bouquets in a bucket of water in the back room of the flower shop to keep them fresh.  Dave took the flowers out of the bucket, carried them through the front part of the flower shop and exited the flower shop to walk to the restaurant to make the delivery. Shortly after Dave had left, Paula entered the flower shop to buy some flowers for a sick friend who was in the hospital.  As she entered, Paula stepped into water left on the floor by Dave when he had carried the wet flowers out of the shop a few minutes earlier that he had taken from the bucket.  When Paula stepped into the water on the floor of the flower shop, she slipped, fell and broke her right hip.
