Pаrаgrаph Respоnse Using the TAP Methоd Yоu will write one well-developed paragraph in front of the online proctor. You may not use notes, outside sources, AI tools, or the internet. You may only use the passage provided below. Directions Carefully read the passage below. Write one academic paragraph (8–12 sentences) using the TAP Method: T – Topic: What is the main scientific issue being discussed? A – Argument: Does the passage support or challenge the claim that Earth is becoming a different planet right before our eyes? P – Points: Identify and explain at least three specific pieces of evidence from the passage that support your interpretation. Your paragraph must: Be written in formal academic tone. Include specific references to the passage (not vague generalizations). Clearly show logical organization. Demonstrate your own writing voice. Passage to Read Over the past several decades, scientists have documented measurable changes in Earth’s climate system. Atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations have increased from preindustrial levels of approximately 280 parts per million to over 420 parts per million today. Global average surface temperatures have risen by about 1.1°C since the late nineteenth century. While this number may appear small, it represents a large shift in the Earth’s energy balance and has already been associated with widespread environmental change. Satellite observations show that Arctic sea ice extent has declined significantly in both thickness and seasonal duration. In Greenland and Antarctica, ice sheets are losing mass at accelerating rates, contributing to global sea level rise. Coastal communities are already experiencing increased flooding during high tides, sometimes referred to as “sunny-day flooding,” even in the absence of storms. Beyond temperature and ice loss, ecosystems are responding. Coral reef systems around the world are undergoing repeated bleaching events due to warmer ocean temperatures. Some species are shifting their geographic ranges toward the poles or to higher elevations. Scientists have also observed changes in the timing of seasonal events, such as earlier spring flowering and altered migration patterns. However, Earth has experienced climate shifts throughout its 4.5-billion-year history. Ice ages and warmer interglacial periods have occurred long before modern industrial society. What makes current changes distinct, according to many researchers, is the rate at which they are occurring and the strong correlation with human greenhouse gas emissions. Whether these transformations amount to Earth becoming “a different planet” depends partly on perspective. From a geological standpoint, the planet remains governed by the same physical laws. From a human and ecological perspective, however, the conditions that support civilizations and ecosystems are shifting within a single lifetime. Writing Reminder This is a writing-intensive course.
