They select multiple agricultural sites throughout Mississippi that have varying levels of soil moisture, nitrogen levels, and temperature. Each variable has been shown to affect soybean yield, but the USDA does not want to consider them as explanatory variables in this experiment. The USDA proceeds with the experiment using three fertilizer treatments. Treatment 1 = Fertilizer A, Treatment 2 = Fertilizer B, and Treatment 3 = No fertilizer control. They randomly assign plots throughout Mississippi to one of three treatments and measure the yield of soybeans after the growing season. They find no difference in soybean yield among the three treatments. There are a few techniques that could improve the quality of the experimental design (one in particular is most appropriate). Describe how the USDA could improve their experiment if they were to repeat it in the following year.
