Instructiоns: This essаy is set up аs three sepаrate quiz questiоns. If yоu are revising essay #1, choose Revise Essay 1, and so on.  Review the essay prompt and write your essay in the text field provided. This essay is set up as an Honorlock quiz. If you are not familiar with Honorlock, it is a proctoring tool that monitors students to promote academic integrity. To avoid being flagged by Honorlock, carefully read the REQUIRED Honorlock Warnings  and Ms. Bryant's Honorlock Guidelines. Then, simply type your essay in the text field, proofread your work, and submit! FORMATTING NOTES: To indent paragraphs, simply hit the space bar five times. Obviously, this format is not set up to enable APA Formatting, but I still need to see where each paragraph begins, so hit the tab key (or five spaces using the space bar) at the beginning of each paragraph to indent. The same goes (in reverse) for using Hanging Indent for the bibliographic citations. You cannot create a separate title page, so you do not need one.  You cannot set up double-spacing, so it's not required.  ENG 102: Research Based Argument Essay Assignment Sheet THE WRITING ASSIGNMENT GUIDELINES (Each of these requirements must be met to achieve a passing score on the essay.)  Length requirement is 1000-1500 words. The title page and references page(s) do not count toward word count. The minimum number of paragraphs for this essay is 6: Introduction, literature review, at least three argumentative body paragraphs, conclusion The essay should use APA style for in-text citations and bibliographic citations.  This is a formal argumentative essay. Use only the conventions of academic writing. Use only the third-person objective point of view. The body should use level 1 headings for each section after the introduction, including the conclusion. Headings are centered in bold font and use title case capitalization guidelines. To set up center alignment, click the icon to the right of the plug icon on the toolbar above.  You won't be able to create a separatet References page, but after you complete the essay, begin creating the bibliographic citations (in alphabetical order by the lead author's last name). You must have 4-8 sources, at least three of which must be peer-reviewed journal articles. To use hanging indent, hit the space bar five times on the second and subsequent lines of each citation.  Your argument must use research from those sources to answer potential objections and to support your essay’s argumentative position. There must be proper APA in-text citations for every instance in which material from a source is used. RESEARCH COMPONENT You began in Module 2 researching sources and should have continued to do so since then. Use sources appropriate to your topic by incorporating information from them as evidence to support and demonstrate the points you are making. Your essay must use at least 4-8 sources You may use both primary and secondary sources, but most of the sources should be secondary. THREE of the sources (regardless of how many you end up with) should be scholarly books or peer-reviewed journal articles from 2015-2025. *A Few Notes about Required Sources:  Your sources must be reputable and reliable.  Excellent sources include the following:  Scholarly books Scholarly peer-reviewed journal articles (This essay requires three of these types of sources) Acceptable sources that may be used in limited fashion include the following: .gov websites Reputable news sources (San Francisco Chronicle, Washington Post, New York Times, etc.) (Note: Avoid editorial pieces) Reputable magazines (Time, Scientific American,The Atlantic, National Geographic, ) Other reputable news sources (Brookings Institution, Pew Research, etc.) Remember that for academic papers, books and scholarly journals tend to provide the best information, and at least three of your sources must be current (2015 or later) scholarly books or articles from a scholarly peer-reviewed journal. APA REQUIREMENTS Your essay must use APA in-text citations, and APA bibliographic citations for sources. Review the APA sections of A Writer’s Reference for help. Remember that to use hanging indent, you'll just have to hit the space bar five times before typing.  WRITING PROMPT Draft an argument about your topic. Remember that you are still working with the same topic you used for Module 2. Write an essay in which you take a clear, arguable stance on the controversy. Support your position with well-reasoned analysis of credible evidence from multiple sources, and address multiple counterarguments. ESSAY WRITING INSTRUCTIONS      INTRODUCTION: Introduce the controversy you’re focusing on in the essay. What is it, and why is it important? Provide any necessary background information, contexts. Your thesis sentence must be a single sentence that encapsulates your argument (plus the reasons for it) that you’ll focus on in your body paragraphs. Make sure your thesis is contestable, that reasonable scholars could disagree with it. LITERATURE REVIEW/ ANSWERING OBJECTIONS: You should use 3-4 of your sources in this paragraph. Two of the sources (at least) must articulate a thoughtfully made point that differs from yours in some aspect. Whatever perspectives you summarize from these two sources, explain how they differ from yours and answer the objections. Why is yours more valid? At least one other source in this paragraph should articulate a perspective compatible with yours but on which you expand. BODY PARAGRAPHS (At least three):  Begin new body paragraphs with transitional words or phrases. Each body paragraph should develop a specific aspect of your thesis sentence. Use PIE or PIETIE (Point, Illustrate, Explain, Transition, Illustrate, Explain):  They POINT is argumentative (and ties to one of the reasons for or aspects of your argument in the thesis). This is your topic sentence.  ILLUSTRATE it with evidence from your research (Use at least one source in each body paragraph. Quote from a source at least once in each body paragraph. Choose specific, convincing evidence (examples, data, anecdotes) from your sources that is clearly relevant to your point. EXPLAIN all illustrations by analyzing how and why they are significant and integral to the point you’re making. Remember to maintain a persuasive (argumentative) focus throughout the body paragraphs.  TRANSITION to your next example or piece of evidence if you have one for this body paragraph; repeat ILLUSTRATE and EXPLAIN for this second example. NOTE: Because this is a longer essay than your previous ones, it’s entirely possible that you’ll require more than a single body paragraph to make at least one of your points. That’s perfectly fine. Just break your body paragraph at a place where you can easily add a transitional word or phrase. Remember to use the guideline of 9-19 lines of typed text per body paragraph. CONCLUSION:   Sum up your points/ reiterate the main claims of your argument (not verbatim!) Do not use research here. End with analysis that answers the “so what?” question—why is your argument about this issue important? Why does it matter? What is the argument’s broader significance? REFERENCES:  You won't be able to set up a new References page. Just hit enter/return and start your bibliographic citations on the next line. Use hanging indent by hitting the space bar five times for each second and subsequent line of each citation. The first line of each citation should be flush with the margin.  You need an APA bibliographic citation in alphabetical order for each source you used in the essay.
