After numerоus restrictiоns оn its sovereignty аnd destаbilizing rebellions, the Qing Dynаsty in China began addressing the “Western Threat” in the 1870s and 1880s by modernizing the army along western lines, initiating new industries, developing railway lines, and founding navigation companies, coal mines, telegraph lines, and spinning and weaving factories. This government effort to catch up to the West was known as [BLANK-1] and it did have successes. However, these changes were limited by a conservative reaction against westernization. The reforms eventually came to an end when the Qing Emperor who had favored the reforms was imprisoned by the Empress Dowager and conservative elites.
