Any student who does not present the Informative Speech (the verbal presentation) will receive an F for the semester. Once you have presented the Informative Speech, your score will then be calculated as part of the total possible course points available. Your final grade shall be based on your performance on exams, quizzes, speeches, assignments, attendance, homework, and the Final. You must have at least Three (3) audience members for this speech (only one can be a child, and they should be at least 3 years old). Also, you will need to be standing for this speech. Ensure that the person recording your speech shows themself and the audience before, during, and after your speech. Audience members should be attentive and listen to your speech. This speech is comprised of four (4) components totaling 125 points. 1. The Reference Page: Remember that you will also be required actually to SAY these sources DURING your speech.You should have at least three sources which help you to: * gain information to produce a well-researched and prepared speech. *Be a credible speaker (oral footnotes must be included during the speech). EXAMPLE: “According to the Journal of Medicine ..........” *provide the audience with relevant information on the topic. Sources should be listed in alphabetical order using APA style. No source should be over 5 years old. Information should be up-to-date and current. 2. The Outline: ( reminder - students are to submit the outline one week before the submission of their speech)An outline will be required from each student. The outline should: Be at least two pages in length. Be in complete sentence format. It should be a guide allowing me to follow along as you are presenting. Included within the outline should be the following: An introduction Three main points and all supporting sub-points and sub-sub points Documentation of sources ( must be the same as those that are documented orally and on the bibliography page) Transition statements And a conclusion 3. A Visual Aid: Visual aids are used to enhance your speech. At no time should you rely on your visual aid. The visual aid will be graded based on its relevance to the topic, creativity, and neatness. Ensure the visual aid is clearly visible to audience members viewing your YouTube submission. 4. The Recorded Speech - - - make sure that you have submitted your outline at least one week before submitting your speech. *The speech should be between 4 to 6 minutes (1 point will be deducted for every ten seconds that the speech falls over or below the specified time frame). *The speaker will be appropriately dressed (No DENIM. If denim is worn, I will assume that you are not prepared to present, and a grade of “O” will be assigned). *The speaker should practice correct delivery techniques when presenting. * Avoid over use of fillers, uh, um, you know, like. * Avoid overusing hand gestures; only gesture when relevant to what is being said. * Remember to maintain eye contact with your audience (the camera). * Maintain good posture: try not to rock on your heels, put hand in pockets, fold your arms, play with your hair, put hands behind your back, lean on anything, pace, or fidget. * A note card can be used, but only one 3 X 5 per student. At NO time should a student read their speech from the note card. READING will result in a “0”. Note cards are a backup in case we lose our place, not as crutches to carry us through the entire speech.
