Scientists studying the interаctiоns оf wоrker аnd queen wаsps in a nest conducted a series of experiments to determine whether the interaction of the queen with workers was required to maintain hive activity, or if the mere presence of the queen in the hive was sufficient to do so.  The scientists randomly selected 9 nests for the study and measured hive activity under three different conditions: Normal conditions (N) = undisturbed nest where the queen interacts with workers Queen Removed (QR) = the queen is completely removed from the nest for about an hour Queen Cooled (QC) = the queen was removed from the nest and placed in a cool environment, making her inactive, then returned to the nest; thus, she is present in the nest, but not able to interact with the worker wasps. The comparative boxplot below shows wasp nest activity levels (proportion of time workers were active) for the three conditions described above.
