A San Diego ordinance at the time required face masks due to the COVID-19 pandemic. A Starbucks employee named Lenin Gutierrez confronted Gilles and asked her to put on a mask or leave. Gilles then posted a photo of Gutierrez on Instagram with the caption: "Meet [Lenin] from Starbucks who refused to serve me because I'm not wearing a mask. Next time I will wait for cops and bring a medical exemption." The post generated numerous responses, some in favor of Gilles and some opposed to her. Subsequently, Gutierrez's friend Matt Cowan started a GoFundMe page for Gutierrez. Although Gutierrez did not lose money in the incident with Gilles, people were sympathetic and donated more than $100,000 to Gutierrez by way of Cowan's GoFundMe effort.
