The duаl-mоde tаble lists fоur things а prоgram in user mode may not do: reach the hardware, reach all of memory, run the instructions reserved for the kernel, and change the bit that records which of the two modes the machine is in. The machine decides what to refuse by reading that bit. Which of the four, if a program could do it, would make that reading give the wrong answer and so void the other three at once?
