Cоmpаre аnd cоntrаst the twо buildings pictured below (on the left, you’ll see a reconstruction and plan of a Roman building. On the right you’ll see photographs of the interior and exterior of an early Christian church). What do they have in common? What is different and why? Discuss the plans of these buildings and how form is related to function. What was the purpose of each building? Who built these structures and why? What materials and techniques were used in their construction and how were they decorated? Start by identifying each structure. What is it called, where is it located, and who built it or ordered it to be built (if known). The best essays start with a thesis statement- one sentence that summarizes the main similarities and/or differences between the structures. This sentence will answer the "big" question- why are these two structures shown together? The rest of the essay should explain these similarities and differences in more detail. The best essays concentrate on comparison, discussing the buildings together, comparing them aspect by aspect. Rather than writing one paragraph about the first building and one about the second, for example, try to write one paragraph about similarities and one about differences.
