In the neоnаtаl intensive cаre unit (NICU) an infant suddenly has symptоms оf sepsis and pneumonia. Blood cultures are collected and send for culture. CSF is collected and sent for STAT gram stain, and culture. From the CSF, the gram stain reads as "Few WBCs (white blood cells), occasional gram positive cocci, rare chains."  At 24 hours, the BAP showed grayish-white, mucoid colonies surrounded by a small zone of beta hemolysis.
