IO/ LAW 1. Pоliticаl scientists оften study hоw аnd why internаtional institutions matter. They sometimes even study their origins, creation, and persistence. But many recent events — the Euro crisis, Brexit, potentially faltering commitments to alliances, a nationalist turn against liberal trade and the WTO system—raise questions and fears about their collapse or disintegration. What do we know about how and why IOs cease to exist? What would a theory of institutional decay look like? What might be important political factors to focus on when explaining the end of IOs? 2. Does the existing literature on international cooperation make a compelling case that certain domestic institutional arrangements (e.g. regime type) create incentives for compliance with international law and/or agreements? If so, what are the primary ways in which the literature has convincingly demonstrated that domestic institutions "matter?" If not, discuss a research program that might help shed light on whether domestic institutions influence compliance and in what ways. 3. Are IR theories equipped to explain the role of populism in international cooperation? Recent events have focused attention on the possibility that populism may undermine the so-called Liberal International Order (LIO), though observers disagree about the extent to which this has actually happened. What does IR theory have to say about whether populist forces will ultimately lead to the weakening or disintegration of international institutions, or whether many institutions associated with the LIO will persist.
