The first оn-demаnd, grаded writing yоu’ll dо for this clаss is meant to be a tool—both to assess what we need to focus on for this class and if you’re in the best place for your writing growth as a college student.  A diagnostic essay is just one way to diagnose where we are at the beginning of the class and one way we can use to assess how we’ll move forward.   In the next hour or so, please write an essay (minimum of 5 paragraphs) about 500-900 words on one (1) of the listed topics. Choose one of the following topics and compose a complete essay addressing it. (Use of “I” is allowed for the choices.) Discuss the importance of reading and in particular reading literature. Think of the literature that you have read so far in your life. What is your favorite piece of literature? Why is this piece so memorable to you? Who or what is your favorite character from literature, television, or the movies? Explain why he, she, or it is your favorite. If you could have lunch or dinner with anyone, fictional or real, living or dead, who would it be? Why would you have lunch or dinner with him/her/it? What would you serve? Why? What would you two discuss during the meal?  Assignment Process: Take a few moments to collect your thoughts, even doodle a few ideas at the top of your paper if you like, before you begin. Consider making a scratch outline of your main ideas, in the order you might place them. Refer back to that regularly as you write. Try to create an opening statement or paragraph that will “hook” a reader. Be sure your ideas are addressing some aspect of the prompt. End the essay with a paragraph in which you reflect on what you said, or with questions of your own. Requirements: A thesis that answers the question and lists the reasons for your answer Explanations and support for your reason Your best grammar, punctuation, and spelling Enough paragraphs to adequately address the topic

Belоw is аn аnswer tо the questiоn "Describe, in detаil, a synapse, how an action potential propagates across a synapse, and how drugs and disease can interfere with the transfer of an action potential." Identify five errors or omissions. Once they are identified, re-write the sentence or sentences so that they are both correct and complete.  NOTE: this is not an accurate or complete answer. please do not use it to study from! The Answer: "A synapse is the small space between two neurons where signals are passed from one cell to the next, usually when an action potential reaches the end of the axon and jumps across the gap. When the action potential arrives at the presynaptic terminal, it causes neurotransmitters, which are basically charged ions, to be released directly into the synaptic cleft through sodium channels. These neurotransmitters then drift across the synapse and automatically create a new action potential in the postsynaptic neuron by depolarizing its membrane. This process happens very quickly and does not require much regulation, since most synapses work the same way. Drugs can interfere with synaptic transmission by stopping the action potential from crossing the synapse or by permanently blocking the synapse so signals cannot pass at all.
