Questions

Lооk аt the IPA chаrt. (1) Hоw is the IPA chаrt of consonants organized? (You may draw a labeled picture.) What do the rows mean? What do the columns mean? Why are the vowel charts not squared but are shaped like a trapezoid?   (2) Why do some English learners pronouns “the” ([ðə] in Standard American English) as [də]? Why is [ð] difficult for some English learners to pronounce? What similarities do [ð] and [d] have that makes [d] a good substitute for [ð]?   ð is a voiced dental fricative and is a rare sound in general. It can be substituted with [d] which is a voiced alveolar stop as both are voiced, alveolar/dental (places similarly)  (3) At one point, a person told a Starbucks worker that her name was "Lee" and she received a coffee cup addressed to "Dee." Why?  (4) Which group of sounds forms the most natural class? Why? /p, a, t/ /p, b, m/ /p, d, w/ /d, j, s/ (5) Why don’t we just write English or any human-spoken language in the IPA (International Phonetics Alphabet)? What would be the pros of this decision?  What would be some cons?  (6) Explain the difference between voiced and voiceless sounds, vowels and consonants.
