Over the last few months Kevin noticed that his hands had begun shaking when he was pipetting chemicals or plating bacteria. He went to see his doctor who asked a series of questions and conducted some tests. He noticed that Kevin’s left foot dragged a little when he walked and that he had less strength in his left hand than the right, as well as the shaking. Kevin also told the doctor that he would experience periods where his left arm would shake uncontrollably. The doctor explained that there were a series of possibilities, including a brain tumor, multiple sclerosis (MS), and Parkinson’s disease (PD). All of them could result in abnormal motor neuron function. The doctor wanted to rule out the most serious first, so he sent Kevin for a brain scan to look for the presence of a tumor.    Describe the process of action potential formation at the cellular level.
