Amazon plans to expand same-day delivery for Prime members across more localities. To support this initiative, the company will develop a new package delivery system using a fleet of in-house drones. Each drone can carry up to 10kg and travel a maximum distance of 5km per trip, regardless of the payload weight. Customers may place one or more orders, each consisting of one or more packages and a specified delivery location. Orders are automatically routed by the package delivery system to the nearest Amazon distribution center. Each distribution center managed by a single on-site drone operator who responds to all incoming orders. For each order, the operator must determine whether the delivery location is within range and whether the total weight of all packages does not exceed the drone's capacity. If either condition is not met, the order is transferred to an external ground fulfillment team for handling. If both conditions are met, the drone is loaded and dispatched. Drones are limited to delivering a single order to a single customer per trip and must return to the distribution center before handling another order.
