We agreed to get the people in those territories to ask Your Majesty, Victor Emmanuel, for protection and to demand to be joined to our country. Your Majesty would refuse, but you would take note of the Duke of Modena's harsh policy and send him a threatening note. The duke, confident of Austrian support, would reply disrespectfully. Then Your Majesty would send troops into Massa, and the war could begin.
