Pаrt II: Essаy (50 Pоints) Directiоns: Chоose one of the following topics аnd write a detailed, focused response that fully answers the prompt. The response is a minimum of 500 words. Include a word count (+1 for doing so!). No notes, books, copies of the text, etc., are allowed for the writing of this essay. "A" essays usually go well beyond minimum standards. Structure for Essay: Have a short introduction to the response and a short conclusion. Do most of your writing in the body paragraphs. Directly address the prompt in the introduction. Be sure to include specific examples from the texts to support your points, but do more than just summarize the plot. Convey your assertions and ideas, and use details from the text to prove your points. Topics: Topic A: The Poetry of William Wordsworth Discuss the treatment of the elderly and the challenges they face in two poems by William Wordsworth, “Simon Lee” and “Goody Blake and Harry Gill.” In your essay, be sure to do the following: Have two paragraphs that discuss the situation of Simon Lee. How has life changed for him? What are his present physical limitations? His socioeconomic challenges? How does the situation with the root at the end of the poem indicate to the narrator what daily life might be like for Simon Lee? Have two paragraphs that discuss Goody Blake. What specific challenges does she face with regard to age and poverty? How does she become a victim of elder abuse at the hands of Harry Gill? Be sure to discuss that scene in detail, and assess the prayer she offers with regard to Harry Gill. In the conclusion, assess Wordsworth’s purpose in representing the lives of these poor rustic figures, Goody Blake and Simon Lee. What do you think his message was to the reader? Topic B: The Poetry of Wilfred Owen Using three poems on our syllabus, discuss the realism Wilfred Owen employs in his war poetry. How do his poems expose the horrors of war—physical, psychological, emotional, etc.? How do the poems reflect Owen’s criticisms of war, particularly in how the young soldier is treated? This essay must have three body paragraphs, with each body paragraph discussing a different poem in relation to the topic. Choose among "Disabled," "Dulce et Decorum Est," "S.I.W.," and "The Sentry."   Optional: You may extend the analysis of an individual poem to two paragraphs if you choose, or you may discuss a fourth poem. Conclusion: What message was Owen trying to send to his audience about warfare?
