College President Dr. Martha Garcia will moderate the forum and will continue the discussion of the college purchasing AR-style rifles for campus safety, a measure that was proposed by Police Chief Kelli Florman in spring 2025. Only sworn police officers will have access to ARs--not other campus safety personnel. Initially, the forums were titled "Campus Safety Forums" before being changed to President's Forum, likely to be able to address a wider range of issues. A majority of crimes reported to campus safety are related to traffic and vehicle incidents, but each semester a number of more violent crimes like assault and robbery take place. During the first forum where the topic was broached April 2025, a number of students lined up to voice their opposition for the move. The forum went over the allotted two hours as a result of student's pressuring the president to stay to address concerns. A second spring forum yielded similar results. In fall 2025, the subject seemed to disappear but word is circulating that now that the upcoming budget isn't as dire, the weapons may be back on the agenda for future purchase. Kelly Florman: "The weapons would be to protect the campus should something awful occur, like a mass shooter. These weapons are standard for police departments--even on college campuses. They would either be locked in police unit vehicles or in stored securely in lockers within campus safety. Only trained and experienced officers would have access to these guns.
