In а typed 700-900 wоrd, well-оrgаnized, аnd thоughtful essay, respond to one of the poetry prompts. For this essay, you'll be writing about two or more poems from Assignments 4 and 5, the poems listed on the schedule. Do not use any additional outside sources. You may only use the Norton anthology, and only the poems listed under Assignments 4 and 5 are eligible for this essay. I will evaluate you based on the following criteria: thesis, support, clarity, organization, and how well you address the prompt. Additionally, see the rubric. Make a good impression.  For this essay, you have 75 minutes and must use Honorlock. You may use your anthology, per the Honorlock directions, but no notes, papers, electronic devices such as phones or additional materials are allowed.  For this assignment, you should choose one of the prompts and respond to it completely. Make sure you have a strong, debatable thesis and good textual evidence to support it.  Use direct quotes from the poems to help support, illustrate, and explain your points, and follow MLA in-text citation and works cited guidelines closely. For this essay, make sure you include a works cited page.  Failure to submit your document adequately will result in a grade of zero. No assignments will be accepted after the deadline.  Once your essay has been submitted, I will grade it as your final copy. Any plagiarism or generative AI text found will be awarded the grade of zero.   Choose one (1) of the following prompts and respond to it completely: Attitude on Death: Describe the speaker’s attitude toward death in two or more poems, analyzing how specific language and imagery reveal this perspective. Poems you might consider: “Ballad of Birmingham,” “Do Not Go Gentle…,” and “My Father’s Song”. Metaphor of the Body: Analyze how at least two poems use the human body to explore abstract concepts like emotional pain, desire, comfort or fear. Poems that might work well here include “Punishment,” “Barbie Doll,” and “Begotten”. Symbolism and Theme: Identify a major theme in two or more poems and analyze how specific symbols, metaphors, or similes are used to develop that theme. Poems you might consider include: “Divorce,” “The Lake Isle of Innisfree,” and “Harlem”. Attitude/Tone Analysis: Analyze how the poet’s choice of language and imagery reveals their attitude toward a specific subject (e.g., mortality, nature, or a specific memory) in at least two poems from our reading list (Assignments 4 and 5). Poems that might work well here include “Head, Heart” “This Be the Verse,” and “This is Just to Say”.
