Write yоur Finаl Dоcumented Essаy in the text bоx. Henry Jаmes is credited with writing the following quotation about literature: "It takes a great deal of history to produce a little literature... It takes such accumulated layers of usage, in and out of the world, to produce that effect of poetic richness so favorable to the writer." James’s idea was that European writers had an advantage over American writers because Europe had hundreds more years of history, society, and culture than America, which, therefore, gave them more upon which to build their works. James knew what he was talking about. He wrote numerous books and is considered one of the best writers to produce work in English. With James’s quotation in mind, choose one of the assigned readings for this course (must be an assigned reading for the current semester found on the current schedule). Craft a five-paragraph essay that argues that this specific piece of literature helped to build something unique/rich/valuable in American literature. Your thesis should focus on what the specific piece of literature (not just the author but the literary work) contributes to American literature. Choose three major ways that the literary work contributes to American literature or three major examples of a specific way that the work contributes to American literature. You will need one quotation from the literary work itself in each body paragraph (minimum of three direct quotations, maximum of four direct quotations). Note: You are limited to one literary work. You cannot write about multiple poems, stories, speeches, etc. You may use more than three direct quotations, but you are limited to 20% quoted material. For an essay of 600 words, for example, no more than 120 words could be directly quoted. Your essay must include the following components: 1. An introduction paragraph of at least five complete sentences (One sentence must be a clear, arguable thesis.) 2. Three body paragraphs of at least five sentences - each of which must include a correctly incorporated direct quotation from one of your sources with an accompanying parenthetical citation 3. A conclusion paragraph of at least five sentences Notes Avoid "you" and "I" unless they appear within a quotation. Avoid contractions. Avoid starting the conclusion with "In conclusion." Content (60%) counts more than mechanics (40%). Focus on quality and responsible documentation. If you have time left over when you finish writing, re-read your essay. Check to be sure that sentences make sense. Look for typing/spelling and punctuation errors.
