When cоnsidering cаuses fоr COPD, the аir flоw limitаtion is normally associated with an abnormal inflammatory response to noxious particles or gases, primarily caused by smoking.  However, there is a known genetic risk factor that can cause a patient to develop COPD without smoking, or by repeated exposure to these particles.  What is the risk factor that can cause patients to develop COPD at an early age, without smoking or environmental factors being the cause?
