The political rivalry between France and the Habsburgs led to the unusual situation of France (a Catholic country) supporting Lutheran princes in the Habsburg-Valois Wars. This Habsburg emperor saw his dreams of uniting his empire under the Catholic Church dashed when he was forced to sign the Peace of Augsburg in 1555. He abdicated in 1556.
