In the 1957 children’s stоry, Hоw the Grinch Stоle Christmаs!© by Dr. Seuss, the Grinch mаde his hаtred for Christmas well-known. On Christmas Eve, in a fit of rage, he made the decision to stop Christmas from coming. To accomplish his plan, the Grinch made a Santa Claus hat and coat in an effort to look like Saint Nick. He tied a big horn to his dog Max to disguise him as a reindeer. He loaded some bags and some old empty sacks on a ramshackle sleigh, and headed for Whoville.At one point in the story, he climbed down the chimney of the house of Cindy Lou Who, a little girl “who was no more than 2.” Inside, he filled up his empty sacks with “[p]op guns, pampoonas, pantookas and drums. Checkerboards, bizzel-binks, popcorn and plums.” He took the food from the icebox and took the “Who's feast”, the “Who-pudding.” And “[w]hy that Grinch even took the last can of Who-hash. Then he stuffed all the food up the chimney with glee.” The Grinch not only took the toys and food, but he also took the tree. While he was stuffing all of his goodies up the chimney, Little Cindy-Lou Who came out of her room, and saw the Grinch in the living room. Cindy-Lou asked the Grinch: “Santy Claus, why? Why are you taking our Christmas tree? Why?” The Grinch convinced Cindy-Lou Who that he was taking the tree to fix a broken light. Cindy-Lou – being only two – accepted the story and went back to bed. The Grinch wasted no time. He loaded up his sled and headed for the hills. As he made it to the top, and just as he was preparing to dump the goodies over the hill, he heard her singing from Whoville. Not crying, as he had hoped, but signing. After several minutes of self-reflection and recognition of his own senseless wrong-doing, he took all of the goodies back to town. He returned the pop guns, pampoonas, pantookas, drums, checkerboards, bizzel-binks, popcorn and plums. He returned the Whos’ feast, the Who-pudding, and even returned the tree.
