Select оne оf the prоminent themes in our reаdings аnd write а well-written essay (following the instructions below) that explains specific ways in which that theme is explored in at least two of our class readings and how the way that it is explored gives the reader complex insight into specific aspects of Caribbean culture. The essay should begin with a fairly complex, defendable thesis statement that reflects the overall idea that you want to convey in your writing. (60 points) By fairly complex, I mean that the thesis should not be something like: “Both How to be Unmothered and Augustown have the theme of family.” The thesis should go further to make a claim. In this specific example, you might mention the ways in which that theme impacts the reader, or some other similar connection. By defendable, I mean that the thesis should be debatable and not obviously true. The essay should then go on to prove this thesis using evidence and quotes from at least two of our texts (books or short stories) to support your point. (120 points) The essay should end with a concluding sentence or two that sums up the ideas discussed and highlights the connection of the points discussed to the thesis. (20 points) You have until the end of class to complete this section. You may use the books and your notes. No Internet searches or cell phones are allowed.
