The industry has low concentration, with the industry's four largest players combined, accounting for just less than 15.0% of total revenue. The industry mainly consists of many small, regional companies. Companies rent portable toilets by the day, week, or month to three main customer markets: the construction industry, commercial establishments, special event services, and sometimes disaster relief services depending on the level of need. The industry is price competitive, especially in metropolitan areas where a higher concentration of operators is located. There is little product differentiation for portable toilets. The portable toilet manufacturing industry is not very concentrated with 10 main manufacturers selling portable toilets at prices between $400.00 to $1,000 per unit. However, portable toilet renters sometimes differ in their level of bundling with other products, such as portable handwashing stations and/or sanitation stands. Traffic at outdoor recreation sites, such as campsites, beaches, lakesides, parks, sporting grounds and zoos also contributes to demand for portable toilet rental services. Nonspecialized heavy-duty trailers and trucks are needed to carry the toilets to and from locations and companies who wish to serve wide geographic regions must absorb high logistical and transportation costs. Despite these barriers, acquisitions have become common in recent years as the industry's largest players attempt to expand into regions and markets for potential growth. Nonetheless, the level of market share concentration is expected to remain low. Industry operators must purchase chemical agents, pumps, protective gear, sanitary paper, soap, hand sanitizer and other related supplies (mostly commodities).
