[A] We now inhabit a world in which a great number of us are online all the time. Furthermore, in those brief moments in which we are offline, we often make it a priority to get back online as quickly as possible. Indeed, one of the first pieces of information that anyone seeks when entering a cafe, hotel, or shopping mall is the Wi-Fi password. [B] Although there are many explanations about why we now have such a dependence on Internet connectivity, one of the primary reasons is our working lives. The thought of missing an important email from one of our colleagues or worse, the boss, is enough to make many of us incredibly anxious. As a result, many people have chosen to do whatever it takes to continuously stay in the loop. Connectivity in one's car and long-distance mobile Internet services have allowed us not to lose sleep over a missed message, even when on a camping trip 200 kilometers from the nearest town. [C] The problem that many people have realized, however, is that we are now losing sleep for other reasons. Being connected 24 hours a day has fundamentally altered our working hours. In the days before we carried the Internet in our pockets, one could expect to leave work at the office and return to it the next morning. By contrast, in our current age, evenings and weekends have become fair game.1 Some even admit to working on their holidays, answering emails from a beach in Maui. [D] Due to the mental strain that comes with this constant connectivity, a number of remedies have become popular. Some have engaged in "device detox"2 - for example, going far into the countryside for a weekend without their smartphones or laptops. Others have committed to different forms of therapy. Meditation3 and yoga, both of which focus on being in the present moment, have become popular forms of such therapeutic activity. [E] It must be said, however, that such remedies are only temporary escapes. Going into the countryside for the weekend without your laptop means facing a pile of emails on Monday morning. With meditation and yoga, the relief ends the second you leave the studio and get back on your phone. [F] It is because of these limitations that some individuals have decided to "downshift" their lives altogether. Rather than simply going into the countryside for a weekend getaway, a minority of individuals have decided to quit their jobs in the city and find slower paced work in rural areas. While some have taken up farming, others have decided to open up small businesses. Although these new surroundings have allowed these downshifters to disconnect to some extent, a life such as this does lead to a series of new problems. Leaving a good job in the city often results in lower income and less employment stability. Consequently, in order to be free from a life of excessively checking your phone, you may need to reduce your expectations regarding the type of lifestyle you want to live. [G] With such a large trade-off4 involved, it is fair to say that not everyone would be willing to downshift. For many, a bigger bank account is more than enough motivation to keep their eyes on their emails. 1Something that is fair game is considered reasonable and acceptable. 2To detox means to get rid of things that are harmful to you. 3Meditation is the act of staying silent and calm for a period of time for spiritual reasons, or to relax. 4A trade-off is a balance between two things that are against each other in order to gain something else.
